Computational Science & Technology Advanced Research Studies (C-STARS)

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Computational Science & Technology Advanced Research Studies Program (C-STARS) is highly selective and offers challenging graduate research opportunities in the computational sciences. C-STARS participants conduct research on nationally visible advanced computing projects in the areas of National Security, Climate Science, Urban Dynamics, Health Data Analytics, Astrophysics, Energy, Chemistry or Biology.


  • Applications are accepted on a year-round basis
  • Appointment periods are based on academic schedules, with a minimum of three months
  • Participants are assigned to high-visibility, leading-edge computational projects
  • There is no U.S. citizenship requirement


  • Monthly stipend; amount commensurate with the participant’s academic status
  • Dislocation allowance (one-time payment); available to non-local participants to off-set costs of travel and temporary housing
  • Possible funding for educational expenses, health insurance supplement, and conference travel
  • Enrichment activities including professional development workshops, Laboratory tours, lectures, seminars and poster presentations, with mentor approval


  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program at an accredited institution, or hold a recent (within the past year) Master’s degree, or have a Master’s equivalency in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) area
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0
  • Have a significant amount of high-performance computational experience
  • Be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa allowing the participant to be paid
  • Have medical insurance during the appointment – verification required


  • Participants must avoid activities that could present a conflict of interest, and must behave in a responsible and professional manner
  • Participants must complete pre- and post-appointment surveys
  • Participants must submit a final report at the end of their appointment
