Ecological Restoration Technician
Position Title: Ecological Restoration Field Technician
Location: Herrity Building, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Va. 22035
Hours: This is a part-time year-round position with flexible hours. Approximately 2-3 days per week
Salary: $12.77 - $19.63 per hour
Overview: Perform as a field technician to support ecological restoration and natural resource management projects under the supervision of the Ecological Restoration Program Manager for the Helping Our Land Heal (HOLH) Program, housed within the Natural Resources Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Duties:
- Maintenance and installation of deer exclusion devices, primarily fences and tree tubes.
- Ensure that fences and tree tubes are effectively excluding deer from project areas and tree plantings.
- Repair deer fences from damage such as falling branches and trees.
- Replace parts that fail due to wear and tear, vandalism, etc.
- Ensure proper functioning of electric fence systems, troubleshoot as needed.
- Control vegetation that interferes with functioning of deer fences and tree tubes.
- Conduct monthly (minimum) maintenance and field check on all deer fences.
- Monthly monitoring of tree tube projects, repair as needed.
- Additional maintenance visits after inclement weather.
- Develop a volunteer program to assist with maintenance of deer exclusion infrastructure. Recruit, train and supervise volunteers to assist with deer fence and tree tube maintenance.
- Assist HOLH project managers and program manager in ecological restoration and natural resource management activities including plantings, seedings, prescribed burns, vegetation management (mowing, string trimming, forestry mulching), supervision of contracted herbicide applications, direct application of herbicide, trash removal, equipment maintenance, chain saw operation, timber stand improvements, rare species assessments, geospatial data collection, planting survival studies, and other duties as assigned.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Any combination of education, experience, and training in the field of ecology, forestry, biology, botany, zoology, geography, environmental science, natural resource management, or related field.
- Must hold a motor vehicle license
- Ability to carry field equipment over long distances on rough terrain in all types of weather conditions. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred to hold a Virginia Certified Registered Technician Pesticide Applicators License or have the ability to obtain one within one year of appointment.
