Student Services Contractor: Molecular Ecology Laboratory Assistant

U.S. Geological Survey – Fort Collins Science Center (FORT)

Position Summary: The USGS Fort Collins Science Center is seeking a Student Services Contractor to support molecular ecology and wildlife genetics research in the FORT Molecular Ecology Laboratory. This is a part-time position, and onsite work at the Fort Collins Science Center is required. The contractor will work directly with USGS scientists on projects involving bison, bighorn sheep, brown treesnakes, sage-grouse, and wild horses. Training in all laboratory procedures will be provided as needed. This position involves working with chemical reagents and wearing appropriate PPE.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and undergo a background check. Student Services Contractors gain hands-on experience in real-world science projects, build technical and professional skills, explore science career pathways, and receive mentorship from USGS scientists. Candidates must have an active SAM.gov registration prior to appointment; applicants do not need a registration to apply but must obtain one before hiring.

Position Duties:

  • Entering, organizing, subsampling, and archiving biological samples
  • Maintaining and reorganizing DNA freezers (including defrosting and transferring materials to new –80°C units)
  • Updating and managing the laboratory’s sample-tracking database
  • Conducting DNA extractions from fecal, tissue, and other sample types
  • Performing PCR-based sex-identification assays
  • Microsatellite genotyping and assistance with data analysis
  • Preparing materials for next-generation sequencing workflows (e.g., GTSeq, whole-genome sequencing)
  • Providing general laboratory organization and supply assistance

Position Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled at a college or university or have completed their most recent degree within the last 12 months
  • Studying or have studied biology, wildlife or fisheries biology, ecology, genetics, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict laboratory protocols
  • Ability to work safely in a molecular laboratory environment

Preferred experience includes molecular techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, genotyping, and familiarity with data analysis or laboratory organization systems.
